On August 5, Sheikh Hasina reportedly resigned amidst a mass student uprising and fled to India. Since her departure, there have been no official statements or directives from the Awami League leader. However, social media has been abuzz with leaked phone conversations, purportedly featuring her voice, where she continues to engage with party members.
In one such leaked conversation, a voice resembling Sheikh Hasina’s is heard claiming that she did not actually resign and that Muhammad Yunus illegally seized power. She asserted that despite the situation, she still considers herself the legitimate Prime Minister of Bangladesh, according to Article 57 of the Constitution.
The voice on the other end of the call, believed to belong to a former Chhatra League leader currently based in Belgium, reassured Hasina of continued support. In the conversation, she explained how the chaotic situation during the uprising forced her out of Ganabhaban, yet she did not formally submit her resignation to the President.
Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, had also previously echoed similar sentiments in a video message from the U.S., stating that his mother did not resign and remains the legitimate Prime Minister.
