The Coronavirus Epidemic – How To Stay Safe From COVID-19

Many of us are unaware of the actual facts about the coronavirus and unknowingly spreading rumors. Not only this creating panic but some miscreants are taking advantage of it. The Coronavirus pandemic is a global emergency right now and the only thing we can do to protect ourselves is to listen to medical experts and shut down the rumors. This is a very serious issue and lives are now at stakes. Many countries are now in lockdown to keep their people safe from this deadly disease.

Coronavirus spreads from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth which are spread when a person with COVID-19 coughs or exhales. Many experts are suggesting that the coronavirus is like influenza (flu) and it might behave similarly. We now know that assessment is wrong. At its lowest estimated fatality rate based on current data, Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, is thought to kill some 1-2% of known patients, compared to around 0.1% for winter influenza. Some are even spreading the false rumor that coronavirus will eventually fade away in summer due to higher temperatures.

Vaccinologists are collaborating together to create a vaccine but it will take some time because genetic material of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19 tends to change their genome, as they mutate, at a fairly high rate. Right now the only good news is the infection is slowing down in China due to lockdown. China claims to pass the peak of the coronavirus epidemic. But we will have to wait a while to make sure that we don’t see a second wave of its spreading when people resume their normal life. There is a likelihood of that happening.

How to keep yourself safe from Coronavirus :

1. Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-
based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
2. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
3. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
4. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
5. Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance
6. Clean your phone with alcohol pads and avoid touching it
7. Only wear a mask if you are ill with COVID-19 or looking after someone who is ill. There is a world-wide shortage of masks, so make sure you don’t waste unnecessarily

What can you do as a concerned citizen?

The best thing you can do now is to keep yourself safe. Only then you can protect others from this disease. Try distancing from people as much a possible. It will not only keep you away and safe from the virus but also lessen the spreading. Don’t stack medical supply, foods or medicines. Some people are spreading rumor to increase sales and to create an artificial crisis for medical supply. Comply with the government and stay updated with any related news. Factcheck any information you see on the internet from a verified source. Don’t create panic and don’t spread rumors. Try to inform more people about the virus and its symptoms.
